About this role

The Senior PHP/WordPress Developer is a high-impact technical role responsible for the architecture, development, and stability of our enterprise-scale WordPress VIP ecosystem. We seek a 'developer's developer' who views high-quality code as a baseline and automated testing as essential to the craft.

In your day-to-day work, you architect bespoke high-performance WordPress themes and plugins optimized for WPVIP. You write clean, modular PHP 8.x with OOP and SOLID principles, and drive BDD collaboration with stakeholders. You implement and advocate for TDD and ATDD, and own Continuous Delivery pipelines using VIP-CLI and GitHub Actions.

You act as a technical anchor and servant leader, mentoring others in engineering best practices. You remove technical blockers and facilitate pair programming to socialize testing across the team. The role is remote within Toronto, ON, working with award-winning journalists and innovative product developers.

This role provides the technical rigour that allows the team to move fast without breaking things. By embedding testing and automation into the heart of your workflow, you enable the organization to scale confidently while mentoring the next generation of engineers.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of professional PHP experience, with deep expertise in the WordPress VIP ecosystem.
  • Proven experience with testing frameworks (e.g., PHPUnit, Playwright, Behat, or Cypress) and commitment to TDD/BDD workflows.
  • Expert knowledge of modern Continuous Delivery practices and WPVIP-specific deployment constraints.
  • Strong command of React (Gutenberg), ES6+, and REST/GraphQL API integration.
  • Extensive experience with performance and security tools such as PHPCS, New Relic, Query Monitor, WPScan and K6/WebPageTest.
  • Engineering excellence with BDD, ATDD, TDD and CI/CD.
  • Technical stewardship of WPVIP architecture and high-scale PHP.
  • Servant leadership: empowering others through mentorship and knowledge sharing.

Responsibilities

  • Write clean, modular PHP (8.x) using OOP and SOLID principles to ensure code is maintainable and VIP-standard compliant.
  • Drive collaboration efforts with stakeholders using BDD to create a shared understanding.
  • Implement and advocate for ATDD and TDD practices to ensure an executable understanding of intended behavior.
  • Own and optimize Continuous Delivery pipelines using VIP-CLI and GitHub Actions, ensuring every commit is deploy-ready.
  • Act as a servant leader by removing technical blockers and facilitating pair programming.
  • Proactively identify technical debt and platform risks, taking initiative to refactor code for better testability and performance.
