About this role

Zap is seeking a Backend WordPress Developer to build and maintain custom plugins that support high-volume eCommerce clients. The role centers on creating scalable backend solutions for sites handling substantial order volumes and peak traffic demands.

Daily work involves developing high-performance features, optimising queries and caching, debugging issues, and integrating third-party services. You will also provide emergency support on a rotating evening rota between 6 PM and 9 PM UK time.

The position sits within a compact Glasgow agency team that blends developers, designers, and project managers. Collaboration happens daily across channels while you retain ownership of backend projects and work within established GIT workflows.

You will research new tools and techniques to strengthen backend capabilities and recommend improvements that enhance speed and scalability across client sites. The agency values initiative and continuous learning in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements

  • WordPress developer well-versed in custom plugins, WP-CRON, transients, caching, and query optimisation.
  • WooCommerce experience developing scalable, high-traffic eCommerce websites.
  • Proven experience writing scalable, clean code for high order volumes.
  • Strong PHP and JavaScript skills with solid knowledge of MySQL and REST APIs.
  • Comfortable working within GIT-based version-controlled workflows.
  • Efficiency-focused with attention to speed, user experience, and process improvement.
  • Independent and collaborative, able to take ownership of projects solo or in a team.

  • Building WordPress plugins that power massive eCommerce clients.
  • Developing scalable, high-performance solutions for sites generating high order volumes.
  • Researching and implementing innovative ways to improve backend capabilities.
  • Debugging and optimising functionality for maximum speed and scalability.
  • Writing clean, efficient, and well-documented code.
  • Liaising with third-party providers to integrate external applications.
  • Providing Out-of-Office Emergency Support on a rota basis (6 PM – 9 PM UK Time).
